For those of you who may not have heard, I recently relocated to Maui
to work at a defense contractor (Akimeka). They are doing really well,
they just celebrated their 10th anniversary in January. They are a
local company, and I really like it here.

If any of you are interested, or know friends who may be interested, we are looking for Java/Oracle/GIS software developers.

They pay better than any other jobs I could find in Hawaii when I
looked, and everyone I work with is cool and they take care of
developers.

If you or anyone you know is interested, they can contact me via
myspace (myspace.com/sidsavara) or email me ssavara [[[aaatt]]] hotmail [dot] com. My project manager is on very
good terms with me, and asked me to get him people, so if you could
help spread the word I'd appreciate it. We can talk about the job, work
environment, living on Maui or whatever else to see if it's something
you'd be interested in. I think it is a really solid opportunity.

Oh yeah, and it's warm here. For all you people living in the continental US and elsewhere ;)
Monday, July 18, 2005

Victory is Mine

I defeated Tales of Symphonia for GameCube. A game that takes other people a week to beat only took me 8 months.

In other news, I've been writing songs for the past couple years but haven't recorded anything new. So maybe I'll record a bunch this week and see if I can complete enough for an album by Christmas. I've always wanted to release something, but I was hoping I'd be more famous when I did it ;).

Tuesday, June 21, 2005

I Am Out There

So I took a break from training like I had said I would and it has definitely turned out to be positive.

I've broken my personal best the last two times I've gone running, including on the one that I failed at last time.

I am out there, and I am training. Anyone remember that?

I got it from my soccer or basketball coach - I can't remember, and in any case it applies to both. When we didn't want to do drills I think he'd tell us - he is out there, and he is doing drills. He is out there, and he is running sprints. He is out there, and he is training. It was supposed to motivate us, remind us that this was a competition - that it wasn't about just being good, it was about being better than the rest of them and beating the other teams (like fun competition - not cutthroat). And that it wasn't just about trying hard - it was about trying harder and pushing yourself, because there were other people out there pushing just as hard and who wanted to win just as badly. That lesson has really stuck with me.

Many times when I've wanted to give up I think about that - how there is SOMEBODY else out there who in the exact same situation would push harder and push through and not give in. And if they (hypothetical person) could do it, why not me? And so I block everything else from my mind and carry on.

We set up our squat rack last night. I have a full gym now. Lack of equipment will no longer hold me back.

I am out there. And I am training.

Thursday, April 21, 2005

Grapefruit

I like grapefruit. That is all. Ok, so this is a pretty inane entry. They can't all be gems people!

Just kidding, there's more to write. I thought it was funny. Ok, so it was a pretty bad joke. They can't all be gems people!

Seriously now.

Grapefruits remind me of my dad. I remember when I was a little kid he showed me how to eat them with a grapefruit knife. Maybe I've always been easily amused, but i thought it was so cool that there was a separate knife just for that fruit. I think it really increases the perceived value of the fruit. Like, it MUST be good! Why else would it have it's own utensil? You don't see like brussel sprout spoons or liver forks, and obviously it must be because they're terrible. I'm sure you see my point. I rest my case.

So anyway, when I came to LA, Aamir (old roommate) was eating grapefruits (not literally the moment I landed), except he didn't know how - he was peeling them and eating them with his hands! As if they were oranges. Uncivilized. Blasphemous. And a little sticky.

So I bought a grapefruit knife and showed him the way. And he was amazed, and said wow, how did you find that?

And I told him - my dad showed me how.

Thursday, April 07, 2005

Finally

First try - 18 Reps. I'll get it next time.
Second try - Too much drinking, not enough sleep, 15 reps. Kick self.
Third Try - 18 Reps. Frustrated.
Yesterday - 20 Reps. Fall to the floor. Finally.

Sunday - Increase the weight and do it all over again

All I need are my headphones and some good music and I always make 20. Eventually.

Friday, March 11, 2005

Dear God

Dear God.

Give me strength. Help me persevere. Don't let me give in when I feel weak and tired.

<Sid's prayers are interrupted>

Big dude: Hey, are you using this?

Sid: Yeah, I just have one set.

Big dude: Oh, ok.

<Sid resumes>

Help me block everything else from my mind and get through this.

<Sid is interrupted again>

Big dude: What are you doing?

Sid: I'm praying.

Big dude: Why?

Sid: Squats are hard.

Big dude: Oh. Uhh...go ahead.

<Sid finishes praying and struggles through a personal best on 20 rep squats. He's on the ground panting.>

Big dude: Man. That praying stuff works. I didn't think you'd make it past 5.

It feels so much better when I'm not falling short.

Monday, February 07, 2005

All Pure

"So when I was in Texas I opened my account at Bank One. I put my money in a savings account and I left it there.

So when I moved here (LA) I opened a new checking account here and I left my savings at Bank One. Then they sent me a notice saying respond in 30 days or we are giving your money to the state department.

What? So I called them and I said what is this letter, and they said there are no transactions on the account. So if you do not respond we will close it because of no activity.

"So we're a little bit ahead in the lectures, which is good because I hurt my hand, so it's gonna be interesting to see how I can write when I've hurt my hand...Does anybody care how it happened? Everyone wants to know how it happened, OK. [Sid Edit: Of course everyone wants to know how it happened, we're curious and aren't too interested in database lecutres =) ]

I do some volunteer work. I used to teach computers but these days the kids know more about computer than I do so I don't do that anymore. So now I coach basketball. And basketball is easier because all the kids know how to do is fall down and I know something about that. Drills and stuff.

All I did was fall and land on my hand, but I'm an old guy you know, and I strained a ligament."
-- Dennis Mcleod, Sid's Database Professor
